In
an interview several years ago with Patsy
Stoneman,
I asked her about her family’s favorite songs, and
she replied,
”When
I was growing up, our favorite family song was
“Somebody’s Waiting For Me.” Any time we started
playing music, my mama would start playing that
song on the fiddle and Daddy would join in on the
autoharp and the guitar and all us kids would sit
around and sing that song. In fact the song became
our theme song when we played Constitution Hall in
Washington D.C. in the late 1940’s for
television. The song was about a fellow’s mother
back home just waiting for him to return. And all
us
kids sort of felt that way too. Cause we knew when
Mama wasn’t with us that she was home waiting for
us and
prayin’
for us.”
Pop
Stoneman
had recorded “There’s
Somebody
Waiting For Me” for
Vocalion
Records, in New York City in January 1934.
