According to
Jerry Chestnut, he wrote the 1972 Johnny Cash hit song, “Oney,”
from a true experience.
Chestnut
commented, “I wrote “Oney” especially for Johnny Cash and it
was one of the very few songs that I wrote for a specific
artist. I thought Johnny Cash needed a song like that, about a
working man with a boss that stood over him. And I had a boss
just like that one time.”
“I was working
for the Florida railroad and my foreman was a guy named Frank
Oney. And he did stand over me every minute I was on the job.
I just decribed him in the song and I added a few things, like
retirement.
“Oney” entered
the country music charts for Johnny Cash on August 26th,
1972. It went to number two, where it stuck for two weeks.
It was his 81st
charted song and was on the charts for 15 weeks.
