Story Behind The Song … “Room Full Of Roses”

February 12, 2010

A lot of songs became hits by accident and Mickey’s Gilley’s 1974 number one, “Room Full Of Roses,” was just such a song! The song had already scored  a # 4 for George Morgan in 1949 and a # 10 later that same year for The Sons Of The pioneers.

In 1974, Mickey Gilley had his own television program, Gilley’s in Pasadena, Texas and his own Astro Records label. He went into the studio to record a song titled “She Called Me Baby,” for a local jukebox operator who wanted a copy of the tune,  He also recorded “Room Full Of Roses” which was to be the backside of the record.  Local radio  DJ’s flipped the record over and started playing “Room Full of Roses,” After the song became a local hit record, he shopped it around to all the major Nashville record labels and was turned down. Finally Playboy Records bought the master tape and Mickey Gilley’s recording career was on its way.

Gilley commented, “There were a lot of  mistakes on that record. The steel guitar was out of tune and I put several “I’s” and “you’s” in the wrong place. Even my piano run didn’t come out right but I think that record just had that certain sound that make it work with the public.”

His “Room Full Of Roses” made the country music charts October 19th, 1968 and made it to number one. It was Gilley’s second chart record and was on the charts for 16 weeks.
